Water Quality Guidance
304 stainless steel is suitable for closed-circuit systems with treated water.
- Dissolved chloride content should not exceed 250 mg/l.
- Water treatment inhibitors must be compatible with stainless steel systems.
- Consult the treatment chemical manufacturer where necessary.
Material Compatibility
Dissimilar Metals
Installations containing mixed metals should generally be avoided, as galvanic corrosion can occur when metals with significantly different electrochemical properties are connected directly together.
Where mixed-metal systems are unavoidable:
- Follow applicable Water Regulations guidance.
- Apply recognised good engineering practice.
- Ensure suitable design measures are incorporated to minimise corrosion risk.
Grade Compatibility
- 304 and 316L stainless steel tubes and fittings can be used within the same system.
- Overall corrosion resistance will be determined by the least corrosion-resistant component.
Potable Water Applications
- Suitable for contact with water.
- Not generally recommended for potable water applications where elevated chloride levels may be present due to the risk of chloride-induced corrosion.
