Water Quality Guidance
316L stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance for potable water applications.
- Chloride ion content in potable water should not exceed 250 mg/l.
- 316L stainless steel can tolerate chloride levels up to 1000 mg/l, however prolonged exposure at elevated temperatures may increase the risk of pitting or crevice corrosion.
- Where chlorine-based disinfection is used, concentration and exposure duration should be carefully controlled.
Material Compatibility
Dissimilar Metals
Installations containing mixed metals should generally be avoided, as galvanic corrosion may occur where dissimilar metals are joined directly.
Where mixed-metal systems are required:
- Follow Water Regulations guidance.
- Apply recognised engineering best practice.
- Use appropriate isolation measures where necessary.
Grade Compatibility
- 304 and 316L stainless steel tube and fittings can be used within the same system.
- Overall corrosion resistance will be determined by the least corrosion-resistant component.
- For potable water applications, 316L is the preferred material due to its enhanced chloride resistance.
Important Design Notes
- If used with the Lawton Stainless Steel Press System, the pressure and temperature ratings of the press fitting system take precedence.
- Pressure ratings above seal temperature limits apply only to welded or flanged systems.
- Vacuum rating across the range is -0.8 bar (gauge).
- The guideline intergranular corrosion limit temperature for 1.4404 stainless steel is 400°C.
- Pressure ratings are based on bare tube under static internal pressure and do not include allowances for water hammer, external loads, bending stresses or fatigue.
