Material Compatibility
Dissimilar Metals
Installations containing mixed metals should be avoided wherever possible, as galvanic corrosion may occur when metals with significantly different electrochemical properties are connected directly together.
Where mixed-metal systems are unavoidable:
- Follow BS EN 14336 guidance
- Apply recognised good engineering practice
- Ensure suitable system design and isolation measures are used
Grade Compatibility
- 304 and 316L stainless steel fittings and tube may be installed within the same system.
- Overall corrosion resistance will be determined by the least corrosion-resistant component used.
Water Treatment Guidance
304 stainless steel is suitable for closed-loop systems using treated water.
Recommendations include:
- Use water treatment chemicals approved for stainless steel systems.
- Maximum chloride concentration should not exceed 250 mg/l.
- Chlorine-based biocide dosing should be carefully controlled to prevent localised corrosion.
Application Limitations
- Suitable for contact with water.
- Not recommended for potable water systems where elevated chloride content may be present due to the risk of chloride-induced corrosion.
